How to Buy an Oboe

As a beginner oboist, it can be a good idea to rent an instrument, since purchasing can be expensive and appreciating the differences between one make/model and another is subtle.

Whether you are buying or renting, be sure to find someone you trust to help point you in the right direction!

Take advantage of people who can help!

  • Reach out to the band director or other music teachers at your school. These folks have a wealth of knowledge and connections on renting an instrument.
  • Visit your local music store: seeing and holding an instrument before buying or renting can make a big difference.
  • Work with your private teacher: reach out to CMEC oboe teacher Amanda Rogel - having a private teacher as an advocate and guide is invaluable!
